Luxury riding holidays for you and your horse

Stonetrail has been offering horse holidays for over 10 years with luxury self catering, a hot tub !, great hacking and livery facilities designed to keep your horse happy on holiday. We are a small and friendly professionally run yard specialising in riding holidays where you can be assured of a warm welcome and our expert advice on the local tracks and trails. You can choose to self guide with one of our easy to follow route maps (no charge) or hire an expert guide to help you explore tracks and trails. Situated on the fell side, our gates lead directly onto several bridleways and open common where you can enjoy quiet hacks to the pub, picnic rides in hidden valleys and exhilarating canters along lovely wide green lanes. It’s a perfect holiday.

Self guiding your way around the many fabulous trails we have is easy with a choice of route maps and talk round sheets all carefully prepared by Alison. We have been organising and leading trail riding holidays from Stonetrail for the last 10 years and we can share with you our expert knowledge of most tracks and trails in this area. We are situated right on the side of the fell and our gate leads directly onto several bridleways and open common where you can enjoy quiet, safe hacks to the pub, picnic rides in hidden valleys and exhilarating canters along lovely wide green lanes.

This is a very quiet area and you can expect to ride all day and meet very few people. For this reason some of the routes are less obvious and more suited to the more experienced “off roaders”. For less experienced we have some easier to navigate routes and we do provide a marked OS map and route instructions. Much of the terrain is open fell grass tracks or stone based tracks and these include small ditches and the odd water crossings. In many areas there are free roaming sheep and cattle. It is important to know that if you need to do some roadwork the roads are quiet and offer some very nice hacking, in particular, the road route to our village makes a very good 5 mile ride with lovely views. The Pennine Bridleway is a purpose made track just behind the farm which will lead you up and over Wild Boar fell and down into the Mallerstang valley and by following a network of bridleways there is a lovely circular route home. In the opposite direction we also have the Howgill fells which have several bridleways with spectacular views. In June 2010 we hosted a Cumbria Endurance event using a 14k and a 16k circular route which proved very popular. An excellent day ride will take you to the Smardale valley which includes a large section of Eden Valley Loop 5 and this is one of the most popular rides we offer our trail riding customers. We recommend that you equip yourself with the local Ordnance Survey Map ( OS 19 Howgills ) which you should carry during your rides.
