Stonetrail is perfectly situated with direct access onto the fell with a great choice of routes lasting from an hour to a full day. We offer steady confidence building rides for riders looking to improve their cantering skills as well as faster more challenging rides for experienced riders. We ride in small groups, usually with two members of staff because we know from experience this ensures a quality riding experience. Most of the riders are led by Alison, the owner of Stonetrail, or an equally experienced Ride Leader. Please click here to read more about Alison and the rest of the Stonetrail team.
Please note that due to the type of terrain and size of our horses, our rides are not suitable for absolute beginners, children under the age of 10. Our maximum weight limit is 13stone. .
The countryside surrounding Stonetrail is a horse riders dream with beautiful bridleways in all directions taking us through hidden valleys and along the tops of the fells. Our routes include the tracks and trails around the beautiful Howgill Fells, the Mallerstang Valley, Crosby Garrett Fell, Ash Fell and the wide open green tracks of Kirkby Stephen common. We love to wander along and enjoy the stunning scenery and every ride has plenty of opportunities for some great canters. Our full day picnic rides are a real adventure where we ride to one of our favorite picnic spots, tie up our horses and enjoy our lunch in the great outdoors with like-minded souls, a perfect way to escape from the modern world for a few hours.
We have a fabulous team of native feathered cobs who are extremley friendly and easy to ride. They are fit and ideal for the type of terrain we ride and whilst they are all responsive and eager to canter they will all stop when asked. All our horses are used exclusively by us for hacking and trail riding and they have become wonderful companions and friends and we cherish all of them. They receive the best standard of care and enjoy acres of grazing when they are not being ridden, living happily as a herd, in as natural conditions as possible. Some of our horses have been home bred and others have been bought as youngsters and brought on by us. You can read more about our horses on the 'Our Horses' page. At the end of each ride you are welcome to help untack and groom your horse.
