Our Location
Stonetrail is a BHS-approved Riding centre, situated midway between Kirkby Stephen and Sedbergh in the Eden Valley on the border of Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales National Park. We have a unique position at the foot of Wild Boar Fell with immediate access in every direction to miles of bridleways, making this one of the best off-road riding locations in the UK. We are within minutes of the Pennine Bridleway which links us to the Eden Valley Loops and close-by we have wonderful riding trails through the Howgill Fells and the Mallerstang Valley. The area is very peaceful and the scenery is stunning, we often ride for hours without seeing anyone.
The Team
Stonetrail Riding Centre is managed by Alison Roper and a small team of staff and volunteers who work hard to create a very welcoming and fun atmosphere for everyone. Alison is a qualified Ride Leader with the British Horse Society and has many years experience of organising and leading trail riding holidays. Alison's passion for long-distance riding began many years ago and through her involvement with Natural England and the British Horse Society she has played a key role in the development and promotion of riding routes in Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales.
Alison is assisted by Josie who is also a qualified Ride Leader. The majority of the rides are led by either Alison or Jo and usually another member of staff to escort the ride.
Our Horses
All the horses used by Stonetrail are owned by Alison and David and used exclusively for hacking and trail riding. They have become wonderful companions and friends and we cherish all of them. They receive the best standard of care and enjoy acres of grazing when they are not being ridden, living happily as a herd, in as natural conditions as possible. Some of our horses have been home bred and others have been bought as youngsters and brought on by us. You can read more about our horses on the 'Our Horses' page.
Opening Times / Ride Options
We are open throughout the year, offering rides lasting one hour to a full day. We also offer long-distance trail rides where we go on a wonderful journey for several days following historic bridleway routes through the stunning scenery of Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales. We also offer centre-based riding holidays with accommodation at our centre either on a self-catering or an all-inclusive basis.
Riding Abilities
We welcome riders with varying abilities and ask lots of questions when you first book a ride with us to make sure you are grouped with riders of a similar ability. We particuarly welcome riders who have not ridden for some time who will enjoy our "Get back in the Saddle rides" which are specially designed to help you regain your confidence. All our rides are ridden at a pace to suit the riders ability which may include short steady canters or a faster more challeging pace for experienced riders.
Small Group Rides led by Qualified Ride Leaders
Unless you book a group ride, we normally limit the number of customers on each ride to 6. Every ride is led by either Alison (the owner) or an equally-qualified and experienced Ride Leader. We are very proud of our highly-acclaimed Approval rating awarded to us by the British Horse Society and we try our best to ensure you have a safe, fun and high quality riding experience.
How to Book
Advanced booking is essential for all our rides. Please telephone Alison or send us an email here. We are very happy to chat about what we offer or any questions you may have.
