About Us

Alison Muir and ArchieStonetrail is a small BHS approved equestrian centre which specialises in trail riding holidays. The centre was opened in 2008 by Alison Muir and since then we have been making the most of our unique setting near Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park to offer riders the opportunity to experience some of the finest off road riding routes in the UK.  We offer riding holidays where you can ride one of our horses and holidays where you can bring your own horse. Our aim has always been to offer a high standard of care and attention to both and riders and our horses and make your holiday fun, safe and memorable.

Stonetrail Riding Centre is owned and managed by Alison Muir who is a qualified Ride Leader with the British Horse Society and has many years of experience organising and leading trail riding holidays. Alison's passion for long-distance riding began many years ago and through her involvement with Natural England and the British Horse Society she has played a key role in the development and promotion of riding routes in Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales. In 2012, Alison was honoured to be chosen to accompany Martin Clunes in his role as President of the British Horse Society to open The Pennine Bridleway, Englands latest national trail, a 130 mile long distance bridleway purpose made for horses, cyclists and walkers.

Alison is fantastically supported by Bronte, our wonderful Lead Guide, who has expert knowledge of the routes, the terrain and our horses and will lead your ride with care and confidence.

Our Horses

All the horses used by Stonetrail are owned by us and used exclusively for hacking and trail riding. They have become wonderful companions and friends and we cherish all of them. They receive the best standard of care and enjoy acres of grazing when they are not being ridden, living happily as a herd, in as natural conditions as possible. Some of our horses have been home bred and others have been bought as youngsters and brought on by us. You can read more about our horses on the 'Our Horses' page.

Opening Times / Ride Options

We are open throughout the year, offering rides lasting one hour to a full day. We also offer long-distance trail rides where we go on a wonderful journey for several days followinghistoric bridleway routes through the stunning scenery of Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales. We also offer centre-based riding holidays with accommodation at our centre, either on a self-catering or an all-inclusive basis.

Riding Abilities

We are fortunate to have a wonderful choice of routes, very suitable for riders who want a steady confidence-building ride, as well as riders wanting a faster and more exhilarating ride. The majority of the rides are led by Alison, the owner, who personally matches each rider with a horse and takes great care to avoid mixing riders with different abilities to ensure that everyone has a fun, safe and enjoyable ride.

Small Group Rides led by Qualified Ride Leaders

Our rides are generally limited to 6 customers plus staff because we know that riding in smaller groups makes a better riding experience. If you book a private group ride we can cater for a larger number of people on the ride; please ask Alison for more advice. We are very proud of our 'Highly-Acclaimed' Approval rating awarded to us by the British Horse Society. Our aim is to ensure you have a safe, fun and high-quality riding experience.
